Viktoria Kokorina
Viktoria Kokorina
CV
Viktoria Kokorina works with the theme of rejected and marginalised knowledge, with the theme of
fading traces of memory and oblivion as a kind of territory where the transition to the zone of the
invisible takes place through death, devaluation or fragmentation of data. The artist is interested in
this transformation, which creates new substance and meanings.
Kokorina turns to the heritage of archaic peasant embroidery of the Russian North, Dagestan,
Central Asian embroidery in the context of contemporary art. A special feature of artefacts of this
kind is the "erasure" and distortion of the original intention, regrettable loss of authors' names.
The artist feels folk embroidery as a system with the properties of living matter. Just as in organic
processes, embroidery canons have a standard at the level of the species and the possibility of
failures, mutations in individual incarnations, repetitions and variations, degradation and
development.
